Stem Cell Therapy Abroad Called Risky
By admin | October 6, 2011
Stem cell therapy has come a long way in recent years and there are several treatments that are being tried in the US. These treatments are showing promise in trials and some therapies like leukemia treatments are already being used. Stem cells are incredibly versatile in their uses and scientists and doctors are attempting to use these cells to help patients with medical conditions that do not have effective treatments now. Multiple sclerosis is one of the disorders that stem cell therapy is being tested on. In this case, stem cells are used in an attempt to regenerate myelin on nerves that degenerate in patients with MS.
Some therapies that involve stem cells have not shown any measurable and repeatable results. Doctors and scientists are working to find out what conditions stem cells can be successfully used to treat and the best way to treat patients with this therapy. When doctors and scientists run experiments on new forms of treatment, they have to report potential side effects and results. If stem cells do not work on every patient that receives therapy, the doctors have to report the findings to the FDA. The FDA has final say on whether a treatment should be allowed to continue in the US.
When people go overseas to get experimental stem cell therapy, they are forgoing all of the safety precautions found in the US. Stem cell therapy in other countries may not be regulated. The effects of these treatments are not documented so there is no proof that the therapy from doctors abroad will have any effect. A therapy is not used in the US because the results are not known yet and there is no knowledge about potentially dangerous side effects. It is best to wait for stem cell therapy in the US.
